American
Cancer Research Center
AMC Cancer Research Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit
research institute dedicated to the prevention and control of
cancer and other chronic diseases. AMC was founded in 1904 as
the Jewish Consumptives Relief Society (JCRS), a tuberculosis
sanitarium in Denver, Colorado. JCRS treated all tuberculosis
patients, including the indigent. It was a self-sustaining hospital
community, with its own farm, dairy, printing press, etc., and
the JCRS received financial aid from a nationwide network of
volunteers collecting donations on its behalf. Fast forward
to the 1950s, when tuberculosis was finally brought under control.
The visionary leaders of JCRS decided to devote their considerable
resources to conquering another horrible disease-cancer.

National Cancer
Institute
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a component of the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of eight agencies
that compose the Public Health Service (PHS) in the Department
of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The NCI, established
under the National Cancer Act of 1937, is the Federal Government's
principal agency for cancer research and training. The National
Cancer Act of 1971 broadened the scope and responsibilities
of the NCI and created the National Cancer Program. Over the
years, legislative amendments have maintained the NCI authorities
and responsibilities and added new information dissemination
mandates as well as a requirement to assess the incorporation
of state-of-the-art cancer treatments into clinical practice.
