AMC was founded in 1904 as the Jewish Consumptives Relief Society (JCRS), a tuberculosis sanitarium in Denver, Colorado. JCRS treated all tuberculosis patients, including the indigent. It was a self-sustaining hospital community, with its own farm, dairy, printing press, etc., and the JCRS received financial aid from a nationwide network of volunteers collecting donations on its behalf. Fast forward to the 1950s, when tuberculosis was finally brought under control. The visionary leaders of JCRS decided to devote their considerable resources to conquering another horrible disease-cancer.
